Description

The oldest functioning theater in the state of Texas is here in Uvalde! It’s called the Uvalde Grand Opera House, and when it was built in 1891, it was the epicenter of culture as a vaudeville stop, and home to countless balls, dances, and graduations. When Uvalde’s own John Nance Garner was Vice President under Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s, he kept an office in the theater (which he owned at the time). After several years of neglect, the auditorium was restored and reopened in 1982, after earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Tours can be scheduled by calling their office.
