Description

At 16 acres in size, Old Tunnel State Park near Fredericksburg is the smallest state park in Texas. Long after it was abandoned by the humans who built it, the old railroad tunnel here became the perfect home for over three million bats; that’s over twice as many as the Congress Avenue colony in Austin! They emerge nightly between May and October, and beyond bat viewing you can hike, picnic, and watch for other wildlife during the daytime. The trail is open from sunrise to 5 PM year round, and there is no general admission to the park; however, you do need tickets for bat viewing; check their web page for details.
